Pretty excited about

Update: The honeymoon is over. Loved the service but it was a bit buggy. By the time they got it working they rolled out a paid only option. For the money I’ll switch to WP. So it goes…

Over the last several years I’ve made it a habit to tag articles, blog posts, book highlights and my conference and workshop notes with my values as I’ve been on a journey forming them in my leadership and business. And while I have gathered a lot of content, I’ve long resisted blogging in part because

  • I didn’t want to start what I wouldn’t finish,
  • couldn’t figure out how to share my learning in a way natural to my process,
  • had absolutely no desire to learn/manage a new platform.

However, I’m an avid Evernote user with 1,000’s of relevant notes and bookmarks tagged in such a way that I feel could be helpful for others … so when came along offering me a familiar platform to expose all that I had gathered and make it available, I got pretty excited. Lots more work to be done (filtering and cleaning up) but I’m off to a good start … I’ll be moving content over in the coming weeks, so check back often.

And I welcome your comments, suggestions, and ideas. This will be a lot more fun if we do it together … let’s do this!

Ken Blanchard’s talk – Servant Leadership Conference Feb 2014

Here are some of my key takeaways from the Ken Blanchard’s talk during 2014’s Servant Leadership Conference.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Fear and self doubt is an ego issue. Your still focused on yourself

Write your own obituary. What do you want said about you

What are your values. What drives you.

Task orientated self or self reflective self.

Think of an “alarm” clock. Should be an opportunity clock. Who am I and how do I want to show up today

Deal with your heart not just your head

Starts with you

Ken Blanchard MSEL 2/24

1) Leaders, define success in your organization.

A) What is our vision? What does success look like?

B) What business are we in? Goals?

C) What guides our journey? Values?

2) You have to see your people as your partners.

3) You have to be servant leaders.

Create eagles not ducks!

MSEL event – 04/2011

Listen 100 times. Ponder 1000 times. Speak once.

Great leaders lead with heart and soul.

Gandhi’s Seven Sins (google). Great list:

Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Science without Humanity
Knowledge without Character
Politics without Principle
Commerce without Morality
Worship without Sacrifice

Managers do things right. Leaders do the right things.

Managers are for today. Leaders are for tomorrow.

#look at Smart Notes?

Great leaders:

– sense of purpose
– listen
– have heart & soul
– passion for people. Compassion for others.
– posses sense of humor
– have humility
– have reverence for others (think of holding an infant)
– Integrity
– pack other people’s parachutes. Help others.
– dream big

No man steps into the same river twice. It is not the same river. It is not the same man.

Closing questions/thoughts:

Greatest challenge of leaders:

To remain grounded on values and stay true to calling.

Keep friends close to keep us honest and see our blind spots.

It’s a journey not a destination

Make yourself progressively worthless. Raise others.

CLA – Evaluation and Selection of Key Leadership Session – 07/2010 — Scratchpad

CLA – Evaluation and Selection of Key Leadership

Define/Clarify your org’s:
-Culture (what is success and failure here as perceived by our people)
-Define your limits (budgets, reach, num people etc)
-Needs (branding, messaging, biz modle scalable and substainable)
-SWOT analysis (strength weakness opp and threat)

-How well do they understand your org (SWOT)
-What will you do in the first 90 days
-What about the first year etc

Need to get at Tribal knowledge (what people inside the org know)

“few people are successful without many others wanting them to be”. Relationships with others is key

Execution & strategy & vision in reverse order. Can they do this?

Ask leading questions

Can they bring people along. People development, leading the best of people

Dealing with change / adaptation

Self awareness and how it relateds to reality. Their story and the references’ story
